How does the joker gets his scars in "The Dark Knight"?

Early in the movie he says that his Father does it to him.

Then later to some one else he says it was due to his wife.

Any ideas why he does that and how does he get those scars in the first place.|||The answer is the Joker%26#039;s face was disfigured with a razor. The details of how it occured, however, are questionable--since the source is the Joker, the stories regarding his father and wife cannot be taken as the truth. But, since the Joker cleverly manipulates the truth throughout the film, it can be assumed that some element of truth exists in his story...and the only constant is the razor. It can also be assumed that it was done by someone close to the Joker (i.e., himself or his father), because both sides of the face are disfigured along the mouth line, but no other scars exist...this indicates that after one side of his mouth was disfigured, the culprit could move onto the other side of the mouth without a great deal of struggle or flight from the Joker.|||He gives two different stories, one involving his father and the second one his wife. No way to know which one it%26#039;s true. |||He does it because he%26#039;s insane. They never reveal in the movie how he got them, the different stories are used to illustrate just how nuts he is.|||He meant that his father made one, and he did the other to himself in front of his wife. Because he is insane.|||the wife. he did it with a razor. He said he wasn%26#039;t smiling enough.|||Shop class when he was screwing around with the saw.|||by copying the carver from nip/tuck|||a knife. at first i thought it was just makeup he put on but then in da movie it said tht he did it to himself.
